Budds Creek, MD -- As tight as the lug nuts on a top fueler.  That’s the way the professional class points battles look, after the IHRA Torco Racing Fuels President’s Cup Nationals, at Maryland International Raceway, where four of the five professional victors won for the first time this season.  Four races into the season, and things couldn’t be much more intense.  The leading drivers are all within easy striking distance of each other.

ello everyone. It has been a while since my last opportunity to write an article on drag racing so forgive me if I’m a little rusty. For those of you that read Popular Hot Rodding , you might remember my “Race Eye For The Straight Guy” series in their Sportsman Drag Racing inserts a few years back. It was a series of articles that was intended to teach people how to get started bracket racing and eventually prepare them to compete on a high level. I had a blast writing those and the feedback from the racers was awesome. To know that you are positively impacting the sport that you live for is extremely rewarding.

Piedmont, NC -- How hot was it at Piedmont Dragway, during the latest stop on the IHRA Summit Racing Equipment Pro Am Tour, presented by Mr. Gasket?  Well, nobody tried to fry an egg on the starting line, but it probably would have worked.  With the thermometer hovering around the century mark, drivers, families, and crews spent as much time as possible looking for a little shade.

Mooresville, NC -- Talk about being asleep at the tree...  The latest event in the IHRA=s Summit Racing Equipment Pro Am Tour, presented by Mr. Gasket, got going dead late, a full two months after its originally scheduled date.  Of course, Mother Nature was to blame for the delay.  Cold, rainy weather at the end of March meant that by the time the Division 9 Raiders returned to Dirty Mo= a blazing sun and temperatures in the >90s welcomed them to the track.

The O'Reilly Super Chevy Show had its run at Montgomery Motorsports Park with beautiful weather, large crowds and great racing.

Bristol, TN -- OK, so maybe the Sunday eliminations at the NHRA O’Reilly Thunder Valley Nationals didn’t really last 24 hours.  But the darker, colder, and later it got, the more it felt that way.  Rain delay after rain delay--I stopped counting at six--meant that it was after 11 PM, when the last pair of cars went down the track.

IHRA Spring Nationals

Budds Creek, MD -- The gray skies never cleared up, but there was double the usual number of happy faces at Maryland International Raceway [MIR] last weekend.  The latest stop on the IHRA Summit Racing Equipment Pro-Am Tour was a two-race event, with Ironman trophies going to the final-round winners on Saturday and Sunday.  Rain interrupted the racing on both days, but the guys from the IHRA and MIR dried the track quickly and kept it good and tight.

The evening of April 5th at North Star Dragway in Denton, Texas started a new chapter for the Outlaw Fuel Altered Association under its new series sponsor Royal Purple Oil.  After an off season that seemed busier than most, nineteen blown fuel altereds came to fight for points, prestige and pride under a vibrant spring time Texas sky.  The large field tied the series car count record and amazingly six teams that earned points last season did not make the trip, showing just how much the circuit is growing (I hear rumors of up to four more teams in the works that will hopefully come play this season). The first event of the eight race tour is usually feast or famine as teams test new parts and performance combinations all seeking the slightest edge over the competition.  This held true in Denton.
