NHRA officials have made these mud flaps optional for the next four races

In NHRA Top Fuel racing, “mud flaps” refer to side-mounted aerodynamic body panels, also known as canards, on Top Fuel dragsters. As of March 18, 2025, NHRA officials have made these mud flaps optional for the next four races, starting with the NHRA Arizona Nationals in Phoenix on March 21-23, 2025. This decision allows teams to choose whether to use them while the NHRA evaluates their effectiveness in reducing rear wheel loads without negatively affecting other performance aspects.

During this trial period, the NHRA Technical Department will collaborate with Top Fuel teams to collect data and reassess the mud flaps’ impact after the four races. If a team opts not to use the mud flaps, the side of the Top Fuel body must be covered with a replacement panel, ensuring no bare chassis is exposed. Notably, during a test session at Gainesville Raceway earlier in March 2025, Brittany Force achieved the fastest eighth-mile speed in Top Fuel history—302.69 mph—without mud flaps, suggesting they may not be critical for top performance in all cases. This optional period is part of an ongoing effort to balance safety, performance, and innovation in the sport.
