Callahan, FL — A major win for racers in Northeast Florida became reality as shovels hit the ground for the all-new drag strip project at Callahan Speedway, in Callahan, FL. The track is located just north of Jacksonville, FL.
The new drag strip is intended to help address the issue of illegal street racing.
After years of planning, delays, and determination, construction is officially underway on a purpose-built, eighth-mile drag racing facility that will finally give local racers a safe, legal place to compete.

Led by longtime track operator and racing supporter David Hicken, the project aims to curb dangerous street racing while giving the community a true motorsports home. The track will feature a concrete launch pad, safety walls, shutdown area, on-site emergency personnel, security, and racer-focused amenities designed to deliver a professional yet welcoming experience for everything from grassroots racers to serious drag racers.

The new strip is expected to host cars, bikes, and even family-friendly events, helping revive a racing culture that has been without a local drag strip for years. Beyond competition, the facility is expected to generate tourism, economic growth, and a positive outlet for enthusiasts across the Jacksonville and Nassau County region.

If construction continues on schedule, Callahan’s newest racing chapter could come to life as early as 2026 — bringing back a much-needed comeback for drag racing in Northeast Florida.
