(Commerce, GA – September 13) In spite of the rain forecast, racers from all over Georgia and part of South Carolina met at Atlanta Dragway for the final 2014 Summit ET Series points event. Rain did cause a half hour delay, but that was it. Six of the seven winners in todays event also earned the 2014 track championship in their class. Congratulations to the new 2014 Atlanta champions! The champions are Jeremy Hancock (Super Pro – 542 points), Chad Brewer (Pro – 574), Nick Wagner (Sportsman – 459), Jay Rhyne (Super Pro Motorcycle – 413), Andrew Patterson (Street ET Motorcycle – 443), Nate “Hot Rod” Halsey (6-12 Jr Dragster – 499) and Austin Carden (13-17 Jr Dragster – 411). Nearly all of the racers thanked Racers for Christ for hosting the 20th annual Race Track Ministry day which included a barbeque, live band, bounce house and fellowship throught the race day near the staging lanes. Racers for Christ also gave trophies to the winners and runner ups in each class.
Congratulations are also in order to the 2014 second place points finishers in each class – Hank Wilhelm (Super Pro – 506), Tim Polnaszek (Pro – 416), Russell Haskins (Sportsman – 410), Tim Sutton (Super Pro Motorcycle – 403) Jimmy Heisler and Randall Long (Street ET Motorcycle – tied for second at 410 points), Austin Bowden (6-12 Jr Dragster – 379) and Katie Wilhelm (sister of Hank Wilhelm – 13-17 Jr Dragster – 346).
Three of Atlanta Dragway’s young lions had a shot at the 2014 Super Pro championship, Jeremy Hancock, Hank Wilhelm and Wesley Mayfield. Jeremy Hancock actually came in to today’s event second in points behind Hank Wilhelm, but took the points lead by crossing the win stripe 0.015 seconds in front of Wilhelm after they met in later rounds, with nine cars left in competition. Mayfield still had a mathematical chance, but that was ended at five cars when Hancock took that round win over Mayfield by 0.011 seconds. In the final, Banks County racer Jeremy Hancock met another former champ, Doug Richardson of Ballground, GA. Richardson’s ’78 Nova actually crossed the top end stripe 0.003 seconds in front of Hancock, but his too quick 6.867 second breakout pass at 99.65mph (6.87 second dial-in time) ensured Hancock’s victory. Hancock’s ’05 Undercover dragster posted a 4.73 at 146.40mph (4.72 dial). Hancock’s wife Ashley Hancock (’03 Undercover – Banks County) was hoping to meet him in the final, but her day ended in the semi-final round. Helping to celebrate his dad’s win, four year old Cooper Hancock staged up his big wheel against friend Easton Brown. According to reliable sources, Easton treed Coop, but then Coop “drove it out the back door” for the win. Hancock thanked the Atlanta Dragway track crew for a great racing surface, PAR Racing Engines, Sid Neal, Mickey Thompson Tires, Racers for Christ and his family and friends for all of their support. “Thank you dad for all of your effort. I appreciate it,” Hancock added. He also mentioned he and good friend Hank Wilhelm spent the previous week kidding each other about who was going to win.
Pro winner and 2014 Pro Champion Chad Brewer from Canton, GA capped off a great year with a final round victory against Travis Bryant from Bowman, GA. Brewer debuted his ’73 Nova in early 2014, and did well for the majority of the season, taking the final points win of the season with a 6.940 at 99.16mph(6.92 dial). Bowman’s ’68 Camaro was impressive with a 6.387 at 107.83mph (6.37 dial), but an untimely -0.010 red light ended his day in the runner up spot. Wesley Tucker (’68 Camaro – Lawrenceville, GA) was the lone semi-finalist. “I want to thank Mike, James and the whole Atlanta Dragway crew for a great track. He then thanked Racers for Christ for coming today, and the Mayor of Hickory Flat for all of his guidance.
