The results were impressive. Removing 30 to 40 pounds instantly and doubling or even tripling the capacity of their old lead acid counterparts&#8230;But with that shift came a wave of questions, concerns, and a few very high-profile fires.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-ogsb=\"rgb(255, 255, 255)\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\" data-ogsb=\"rgb(255, 255, 255)\"><span class=\"x_799797776highlight\" data-ogsb=\"rgb(240, 240, 240)\"><span class=\"x_799797776colour\" data-ogsc=\"rgb(8, 8, 9)\"><span class=\"x_799797776font\"><span class=\"x_799797776size\">Lithium batteries can be perfectly safe in a race car. But only when they\u2019re built correctly, wired correctly, and charged correctly. And that\u2019s where many racers get into trouble.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3728 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/DragCoverage.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/GL3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<h2 data-start=\"1176\" data-end=\"1221\"><strong data-start=\"1179\" data-end=\"1219\">The Real Reason Lithium Fires Happen<\/strong>You\u2019ve seen the pit videos: smoke roaring out of a trunk, flames hot enough to melt aluminum, crew guys scrambling with extinguishers. When a lithium battery fails, temperatures can spike to <strong data-start=\"1413\" data-end=\"1429\">over 2,000\u00b0F<\/strong>, and the fire doesn\u2019t behave like anything from an AGM.<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1487\" data-end=\"1530\">But here\u2019s the part most racers don\u2019t know:<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1532\" data-end=\"1629\"><strong data-start=\"1532\" data-end=\"1608\">Most lithium battery fires in racing come from the car, not the battery.<\/strong><br data-start=\"1608\" data-end=\"1611\" \/>They\u2019re caused by:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1630\" data-end=\"1790\">\n<li data-start=\"1630\" data-end=\"1651\">\n<p data-start=\"1632\" data-end=\"1651\">Undersized wiring<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1652\" data-end=\"1678\">\n<p data-start=\"1654\" data-end=\"1678\">Bad or missing grounds<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1679\" data-end=\"1695\">\n<p data-start=\"1681\" data-end=\"1695\">Overcharging<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1696\" data-end=\"1713\">\n<p data-start=\"1698\" data-end=\"1713\">Wrong charger<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1714\" data-end=\"1746\">\n<p data-start=\"1716\" data-end=\"1746\">Cheap imported lithium cells<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1747\" data-end=\"1790\">\n<p data-start=\"1749\" data-end=\"1790\">No real BMS (Battery Management System)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1792\" data-end=\"1964\">AJ from GO Lithium told us one of the biggest problems he sees:<br data-start=\"1858\" data-end=\"1861\" \/><strong data-start=\"1861\" data-end=\"1964\">\u201cRacers want to go lightweight on the battery AND lightweight on the wiring.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1966\" data-end=\"2080\">Many racers are trying to run <strong data-start=\"1996\" data-end=\"2012\">4-gauge wire<\/strong> on a 16V lithium setup.<br data-start=\"2036\" data-end=\"2039\" \/>That might be fine for AGM \u2014 not lithium.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2082\" data-end=\"2168\">AJ&#8217;s recommendation?<br data-start=\"2105\" data-end=\"2108\" \/><strong data-start=\"2108\" data-end=\"2168\">\u201cStart at 0-gauge. Don\u2019t go smaller than 2-gauge. Ever.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2170\" data-end=\"2308\">Lithium batteries deliver power <em data-start=\"2202\" data-end=\"2213\">instantly<\/em>. If the cable can\u2019t safely move that current, the heat finds a new path \u2014 and something melts. This is where some lithium batteries have fail-safes, and others do not.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3733 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/DragCoverage.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/LE8.avif\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"750\" \/><\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"2315\" data-end=\"2368\"><strong data-start=\"2318\" data-end=\"2366\">AGM vs. Lithium: The Truth Behind the Switch<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"2369\" data-end=\"2408\">AGM batteries are tanks. We control everything.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3048\" data-end=\"3119\">Most lithium batteries sold for racing are mass-produced overseas for pennies with:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"3120\" data-end=\"3302\">\n<li data-start=\"3120\" data-end=\"3170\">\n<p data-start=\"3122\" data-end=\"3170\">Cylindrical \u201cAA-style\u201d cells soldered together<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3171\" data-end=\"3197\">\n<p data-start=\"3173\" data-end=\"3197\">Spray-foam (flammable) in the case<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3198\" data-end=\"3220\">\n<p data-start=\"3200\" data-end=\"3220\">Utilize the cheapest BMS system available<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3221\" data-end=\"3241\">\n<p data-start=\"3223\" data-end=\"3241\">No cell matching<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3242\" data-end=\"3265\">\n<p data-start=\"3244\" data-end=\"3265\">No comprehensive bench testing<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3266\" data-end=\"3302\">\n<p data-start=\"3268\" data-end=\"3302\">No real world track testing<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"3304\" data-end=\"3343\">Go Lithium takes the opposite approach:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"3344\" data-end=\"3755\">\n<li data-start=\"3344\" data-end=\"3400\">\n<p data-start=\"3346\" data-end=\"3400\">The type approved by the UN to be in peoples houses for solar power.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3344\" data-end=\"3400\">They UN test their cells to insure they maintain the highest safety standards and extensively track test every design before it is offered for sale. How should it be stored off-season?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"4704\" data-end=\"4748\">Lithium does NOT like being drained to zero.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"4750\" data-end=\"4810\"><strong data-start=\"4754\" data-end=\"4808\">7. Does the company actually test their batteries?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"4811\" data-end=\"4853\">Not lab testing \u2014 <strong data-start=\"4829\" data-end=\"4852\">drag racing testing<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3736 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/DragCoverage.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/GL11.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"986\" height=\"555\" \/><\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"4860\" data-end=\"4932\"><strong data-start=\"4863\" data-end=\"4930\">Racers Aren\u2019t Wrong to Be Concerned \u2014 They\u2019re Just Not Informed<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"4933\" data-end=\"5005\">Lithium batteries are not dangerous by nature.<br data-start=\"4979\" data-end=\"4982\" \/>They\u2019re dangerous when:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"5006\" data-end=\"5203\">\n<li data-start=\"5006\" data-end=\"5030\">\n<p data-start=\"5008\" data-end=\"5030\">Cheap cells are used<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"5031\" data-end=\"5055\">\n<p data-start=\"5033\" data-end=\"5055\">Inferior BMS systems fail<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"5056\" data-end=\"5093\">\n<p data-start=\"5058\" data-end=\"5093\">Incorrect chargers are plugged in<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"5094\" data-end=\"5123\">\n<p data-start=\"5096\" data-end=\"5123\">Racers run too-small wire<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"5124\" data-end=\"5155\">\n<p data-start=\"5126\" data-end=\"5155\">Alternators overcharge them<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"5156\" data-end=\"5203\">\n<p data-start=\"5158\" data-end=\"5203\">Or the battery is allowed to die repeatedly<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"5205\" data-end=\"5275\">When done correctly, lithium is just as safe as AGM \u2014 and far lighter.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5277\" data-end=\"5340\">When done incorrectly, it can become the hottest fire in the pits, unless you have a battery that has the right type of lithium and is properly built with fail-safes.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"5347\" data-end=\"5416\"><strong data-start=\"5350\" data-end=\"5414\">Final Thoughts: Lithium Is Safe\u2026 When You Pick the Right One<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"5417\" data-end=\"5590\">Racers are always chasing lighter and faster.
