After eight years of ownership under Tommy and Judy Franklin, the historic 500-acre facility has entered into an agreement with Darryl Cuttell of Cuttell Motorsports and the IHRA to purchase the property. The move places Virginia Motorsports Park under the IHRA banner, adding another marquee facility to Cuttell\u2019s growing portfolio of drag strips across the country.<\/p>\n
With more than 30 years of motorsports history, VMP has long been a staple in the Mid-Atlantic racing scene. The championship quarter-mile \u2014 converted to an all-concrete racing surface in 2018 \u2014 has hosted numerous national and regional events and has seen several national records set on its surface. Beyond drag racing, the facility features autocross, drifting, and other motorsports activities, while the Dirtplex hosts motocross, BMX, mud bogs, 5K runs, and more \u2014 making it one of the most versatile motorsports venues in the region.<\/p>\n

In a statement, Tommy Franklin reflected on the journey:<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have truly enjoyed the tenure of time that we have had at this facility. When we came in here, we had boots on the ground to update and enhance it to the best of our abilities. The gratitude and support we received from all of you was a great motivator. We are passing off the baton in hopes that this is just the beginning of even more exciting times in the history of Virginia Motorsports Park.\u201d<\/p>\n
Franklin also expressed confidence in Cuttell\u2019s commitment to the drag racing community and optimism for the track\u2019s continued growth and improvement in the years ahead.<\/p>\n
For IHRA and Cuttell Motorsports, this acquisition further strengthens their footprint in the national drag racing landscape. For racers and fans, it signals stability \u2014 and opportunity \u2014 at one of the East Coast\u2019s premier racing facilities.<\/p>\n
