Results: JEGS Cajun SPORTSnationals, Belle Rose

BELLE ROSE, La.  Hundreds of racers in nine categories were narrowed to nine champions late Saturday night at the JEGS NHRA Cajun SPORTSnationals Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at No Problem Raceway Park. Slate Cummings of Ponchatoula, La., was victorious in the Moser Sportsman Shootout in the final round contested Sunday morning.

  

Cummings worked his way through the unique sixteen car Moser Shootout field, where racers from seven entirely different class structures battled it out.  Cummings powered his ’00 Stock Corvette to the $5,000 payday over Jeff Lopez, BedfordTexas, in his Super Comp entry. Lopez was hoping to double up on his Super Comp event title from the night prior when he defeated John Labbous, White House, Tenn., with a winning pass of 8.908 seconds at 158.06 mph. This marks his 2nd National event victory, both here at the JEGS Cajuns. 

Kevin Helms, SchrieverLa., is off to a hot start this season picking up back to back wins in Stock Eliminator. He grabbed his 23rd National event Wally trophy with a final round pass of 9.363 mph at 126.38 mph in his ’10 Challenger to defeat Chuck Downing, BrittonMich. Helms also visited the winners circle last week at the Amalie Motor Oil NHRA Gatornationals in Gainesville to add to his divisional win there in late February.

The Super Stock title went to Anthony Bertozzi of AshlandVa., securing his fourth career JEGS NHRA Cajun SPORTSnationals victory. In a final round battle of Northeast racers, Joe Santangelo, MarlboroughConn., had a slight advantage off the line, but Bertozzi pieced together a .011 second package for his 18th National event win. 

  

Keith Raftery, Lake CharlesLa., and Todd Ewing, CullmanAla., left even at the start with Raftery grabbing the finish line stripe in the division’s Sunset Performance Top Sportsman final. The winning pass of 6.585 seconds, 213.37 mph gave Raftery his fourth National event win. The KPE Top Dragster title went to Robert Mandell ofCulleokaTenn., as he defeated Samuel Patrick, PlaquemineLa., 6.442, 202.73 over 6.616, 201.73 for his first National even win.

 

TewksburyMass., resident Arnie Martel, drove  his ’15 Camaro to a 7.671 second, 167.01 mph lap to score the Comp win over Glen Treadwell, SorrentoFla. While it was Martel’s 15th National event win, Holden Laris from RacelandLa., was able to secure his first. Teddy Moses, MandevilleLa., went red in his ’27 Ford handing the Super Gas trophy to the 18 year old Laris.

It was a battle of Texans named Ray in the Super Streetfinal as Ray Dew of League City defeated Ray Todd of Friendswood. Dew picked up his 2nd JEGS Cajuns title running his ’70 Nova 10.908 seconds at 138.88 mph in the 10.90 category.

 

In Sportsman Motorcycle presented by Harley Davidson, it was Dave Gautreaux of River RidgeLa., hoisting the trophy in the winners circle. He used a 9.036 second, 146.24 mph pass to defeat Randal Guitreaux, PrairievilleLa., 10.067, 137.96.

 

2014 Top Fuel and Pro Fuel Harley Davidson Champions found their way back into the winners circle at No Problem Raceway. Tommy Grimes out of PfufftownN.C., raced to a 6.444 second, 225.86 mph pass to defeat Randal Andras, AmeliaLa., 7.606, 185.33, in the Top Fuel final. The Pro Fuel trophy went to Johnny Vickers, Millers CreekN.C., using a 7.161 second, 178.10 mph lap to defeat Dennis Fisher of SpringboroOhio.

 

John Toth, Twilight, Pa., pulled double duty this weekend and picked up two trophies. Toth defeated Michael R Majeska, League CityTexas, in the Street Pro Harley final while knocking out Augustine Herrera, MontebelloCalif., in the Hot Street Harley money round. Other two wheel winners include Jay Wagner, WarsawInd., in Pro Gas Harley, John Cabral, of TracyCalif., in Screamin’ Eagle Harley, and William Rowe Jr., HellentowerPa., in Draggin Bagger Harley.
